WHAT IS EMPOWER?

EMPOWER is a diabetes education course that supports people to better manage their type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of long term health complications. 

People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes across North Tyneside are able to attend a local EMPOWER course to receive support and advice on how to self-manage their diabetes to live a healthier quality of life -  it’s free, paid for by the NHS and only lasts four hours!

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?

Attending a diabetes education course is a very important part of learning the basics of how to manage your type 2 diabetes and live a healthier life.

The EMPOWER course will help you understand what diabetes is, the effect it has on your body and how to make small, achievable changes to the food you eat and your everyday life. The course focuses on diet, exercise and lifestyle changes, setting personal goals and enabling you to take better control of your diabetes.

WHO TEACHES THE COURSE?

EMPOWER courses are routinely led by trained educators who will facilitate the group session and answer any questions that you may have.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE LAST?

The course is delivered in one session of approximately four hours.

WHERE WILL THE COURSES BE?

Sessions are run in local venues near to you. Most courses are run during the week but we also offer evening courses. Look on the Courses page for a list of the next courses.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEND THE COURSE?

Courses will usually be for between 6 and 12 people. You can bring a carer, friend or family member to attend the session with you.

HOW DO I ATTEND A COURSE?

If you would like to join a course, please speak to your GP or practice nurse who can refer you. Once you have been referred, we will send out a confirmation letter and offer you a place on a course. Or you can book your place online by clicking here.
